Earl Grey Tea is one of our most popular teas in the shop, but we’ve been simply dying to put a twist on plain ordinary tea…and combine it with a winter favorite: Hot Chocolate! This recipe makes 4 cups of amazing brew…so be sure to put it on your list when making gifts!
½ cup dark or bittersweet chocolate chips*
½ cup loose leaf Earl Grey Tea
1¾ cups granulated sugar
1¼ cups Dutch cocoa powder*
*Splurge and the good stuff and use really high quality chocolate chips and cocoa powder for the best tasting hot chocolate.
To make the hot chocolate mix:
- Use a spice grinder or food processor to grind the Earl Grey tea as fine as possible; it will mix into the hot chocolate best if it’s finely ground.
- Use the same spice grinder or food processor to grind the chocolate chips as fine as possible; they will dissolve into the hot chocolate better this way.
- In a large bowl, whisk the ground tea and ground chocolate with the sugar and cocoa until thoroughly combined.
- Transfer the mix to sealable jars and label. Be sure and include the easy instructions to make hot chocolate (below) on the label if you’re giving these as gifts. The mix will last for months if stored in well-sealed containers.
To make a mug of hot chocolate:
Whisk 2 tablespoons of the hot chocolate mix into 1 cup of hot milk or dairy alternative, like almond milk, soy milk, or coconut milk.
